Broadly speaking, when it comes to roofing there are two types of plywoods used - structural and general plywood. Yep only two! Now let's understand the difference. Structural plywood has the upperhand of proven strength, endurance and performance provided by the supplier. IS grading, emission checks and indications showing that it has passed building regulations (structural) are all merits of this type. General plywoods are less expensive and obviously you can enjoy the features of plywood over other materials, but it's better to avoid its use in structural roofing requirements. This wood ain't enduring as structural plywood. But at times for general roofing, this guy will do the job in less money. Shuttering plywood is another option. But beware, it isn't for general roofing but is used to hold concrete whilst it sets. So it will anyways come in handy. Some facts and figures while considering your roofing plywood: It's not the roof, man! Plywood is actually used as roof decking. It's the material that lies on top of the main roofing structure, and the underlayment. Why plywood for roofing? Plywoods are selected for this purpose due to their strength. Roof structure takes the majority of the weight, but the plywood needs to be able to support the rest of the roofing system. That's the point! It is formed from multiple layers of wood bonded together with glue, and the grains run in alternate directions through each layer, which ensures the board’s strength is evenly spread, makes the board resistant to shrinking or expansion, and also reduces the likelihood of any splitting when nailed. All of that in a sentence.. Uff! Plywood is resistant to prolonged exposure of moisture and dries out super quick. Rain is not an issue here. When plywood gets wet, it swells evenly across the plywood sheet, and then when it dries out, it goes back to the normal sizing. Literally roofing remains intact!
